چکیده

Birdsong's highly informative overview of the theoretical issues and facts on age and second language acquisition (L2A) has made me realize again how deceptively appealing it is to put two and two together in this overall discussion of age and acquisition. Let me explain what I mean by this temptation. If one takes the view that the goal of linguistic theory is to seek an explanation for the problem of language acquisition, for some linguists, myself included, part of the solution will be found in postulating Universal Grammar (UG) as a theory of an innate language faculty. Such a nativist approach provides a plausible answer to the successful, rapid, and pretty much uniform attainment of L1. In the majority of cases of adult L2A, we see anything but successful, rapid, or uniform language attainment: "The outcome ... is demonstrably different" (Birdsong, this volume, p. 9). If an innate language faculty plays a decisive role in the success of acquisition, it is tempting to explain the lack of success by pointing to a hypothesized absence of that same faculty. If not total absence, then at least limited availability. If one adopts an essentially biolinguistic approach to the study of language, it is all too easy to feel confident that some form of explanation for a maturation-based critical period will ultimately make sense. Indeed, the maturational factor

The incidence of error in young children's Wh-questions.

Many current generativist theorists suggest that young children possess the grammatical principles of inversion required for question formation but make errors because they find it difficult to learn language-specific rules about how inversion applies. The present study analyzed longitudinal spontaneous sampled data from twelve 2-3-year-old English speaking children and the intensive diary data...

Assess the Critical Period Hypothesis in Second Language Acquisition

The ultimate attainment level of Second Language Acquisition (L2A) contrasts sharply with that of First Language Acquisition (L1A) (Birdsong, 1999, p.1). That is: various success versus universal success (Gleitman & Newport, 1995, p.1). This significant difference between L1A and L2A is explained by the Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH). The CPH states that for language acquisition, either first...

Explaining errors in children ’ s questions q Caroline

The ability to explain the occurrence of errors in children’s speech is an essential component of successful theories of language acquisition. The present study tested some generativist and constructivist predictions about error on the questions produced by ten English-learning children between 2 and 5 years of age. The analyses demonstrated that, as predicted by some generativist theories [e.g...

Songs to syntax: the linguistics of birdsong.

Unlike our primate cousins, many species of bird share with humans a capacity for vocal learning, a crucial factor in speech acquisition. There are striking behavioural, neural and genetic similarities between auditory-vocal learning in birds and human infants. Recently, the linguistic parallels between birdsong and spoken language have begun to be investigated. Although both birdsong and human...

Age and Second Language Acquisition and Processing: A Selective Overview

This article provides a selective overview of theoretical issues and empirical findings relating to the question of age and second language acquisition (L2A). Both behavioral and brain-based data are discussed in the contexts of neurocognitive aging and cognitive neurofunction in the mature individual. Moving beyond the classical notion of “deficient” L2 processing and acquisition, we consider ...
